The Five Fingered Hand of Eris (sometimes abbreviated FFHoE, 5FHoE, or written simply Hand of Eris) is a Discordian glyph or symbol representing the hand of the goddess Eris. The number 5 is an important and sacred numeral to the Discordian faith.

Explanation Given in the Principia Discordia[]

The Hand of Eris is explained on page 00021 of the Principia Discordia as thus:

Eris hand

The FFHoE, drawn vertically as it is on page 21 of the Principia Discordia.

"The official symbol of POEE is here illustrated. It may be this, or any similar device to represent two opposing arrows converging into a common point. It may be vertical, horizontal, or else such, and it may be elaborated or simplified as desired. The esoteric name for this symbol is The Five Fingered Hand of Eris, commonly shortened to The Hand. NOTE: In the lore of western magic, the top curvy bit is taken to symbolize horns, especially the horns of Satan or of diabolical beasties. The Five Fingered Hand of Eris, however, is not intended to be taken as satanic, for the "horns" are supported by another set, of inverted "horns." Or maybe it is walrus tusks. I don't know what it is, to tell the truth. "[1]

Discrepancies, Nitpicking[]

Some might look at the symbol and say that this "hand" has 6 fingers, but the simple explanation why it is a five fingered hand and not one with six fingers is the simple fact that one of those lines is actually considered to be a wrist. If you didn't understand that, you probably aren't Illuminated yet.

It is also two arrows pointing at each other, which can be seen as the underlining of the basic principle of the mythological Eris, which would be "strife." It can also be seen as two feminine receptive crescents resting against a phallic, masculine line.

As A Religious Symbol[]

The Hand of Eris is often worn on necklaces by Discordians as a religious symbol of their beliefs in Eris. Other such symbols that are worn by Discordians include golden apples and sacred Chaos.

As A Planetary Glyph[]

It is the subject of some debate whether the Hand of Eris should be the symbol of the dwarf planet Eris.[2] There is currently no official, recognized symbol for the dwarf planet Eris. [3] Thus, Discordians came up with a petition to lobby the International Astronomers Union (IAU) to recognize the Five Fingered Hand of Eris (albeit in a more vertical and upright form) as the official symbol of the newly named dwarf planet Eris.[4]
