An alchemists laboratory

Alchemy is normally portrayed as the process of turning base metals into gold. In more general terms it can be seen as the process of transmutation and purification. In its more spiritual aspects it can also be seen as an inner process, a refining and purification of the Self. The success or outcome of most Alchemy is the Philosopher's Stone, which can be seen as the illuminated mind. Through alchemy, it is believed that one could attain immortality, change lead into gold, or create artificial life.

Alchemy has been around for a very long time, since the times of Thoth or Hermes Trismegistus, who are said to be its originators. It can be seen as the precursor to modern chemisty.
